The Special Investigations Unit functions to receive and investigate ANY complaint about a police officer, prison officer or officer of other prescribed disciplinary forces. This includes complaints from prisoners. There is an Ombudsman Complaint Box at every prison from which, SIU collects and responds to written prisoner complaints on a monthly basis.
On a regular basis, the Special Investigations Unit monitors progress, advises and makes recommendations regarding complaints made directly to a disciplinary force. The Special Investigations Unit conducts these reviews with:
- The Professional Standards Unit of the MPPCS pursuant to the Police Service Act 2009; and
- The Sexual Offenders Registry Team of the MPPCS pursuant to the Sexual Offenders Registry Act 2017.
For information regarding these reviews, Review Reports can be found under the “Resources & Publications” Tab – Special Investigations.
The Ombudsman may determine any complaints about a police officer, prison officer or officer of other prescribed disciplinary forces as per Special Investigations Unit Regulations 2016.
